Okay so, the evil demon Nausea seems to have said farewell. Thanks be to Heaven! Now, just keep those pre-term labor problems I had with Drew away and all will be forgiven. :-)
So, in tribute to our first anniversary of living in the South -- South Cackalacky to be specific -- I thought that I would post a list of reasons why I like living here:
1. Doors are always held, women are always given priority in getting on or off an elevator, and people generally are kinder and nicer. Although there is a definite sense of women being special because they are mothers or the "fairer sex" -- I do not find it offensive. I like being treated like a lady and not shoved aside so that someone can grab a seat on public transportation before me.
2. Five kinds of pimento cheese at the grocery store. I do not eat pimento cheese, but, I think it is charming that folks love the stuff so much that the store would have five variations available. In the Midwest they have five kinds of bratwurst. I think that is charming, too.
3. Family is always the best answer for why you cannot attend a meeting, for the answer to "what did you do this weekend?", to "where are going for the holidays?" I think this is a quality that most of the Midwest shares, but, places like DC take family for granted and if you use it as a reason for not doing something, then the cynics view you as being lazy or telling a lie.
4. Slower pace of life. I work in a busy little city, but even here, things move at a slower pace. What this means is that you can take some time to reflect and enjoy things more. If you are constantly going at a faster pace, then dealing with the slower pace can be annoying. But, when you LIVE here, it is such a relief to not be running, running, running and it makes daily life so much better.
5. Ten million barbecue shops. We always found it so strange to live in Chicago and yet have a hard time finding cute little sandwich shops that were not part of chains. In DC, we had two stand-out favorites -- the Lost Dog Cafe and the Italian Shop. But, in Chicago, it was tough-going. Hot dog places? Sure, but if you wanted a sandwich, it was Panera or Subway or Quiznos. So, what does this have to do with barbecue shops? Well, a good sandwich is never too far away when you have barbecue places all over. Plus, we have a local chain (very local) called McAlister's Deli that serves a huge variety of sandwiches.
6. Lemonade. You can always get lemonade -- all year long.
7. Diet Dr. Pepper at the soda fountains. Seriously. You go to McDonald's or Chik Fil A or Wendy's or Chili's or the soda machine in your office, you can choose Diet Dr. Pepper. Sometimes you just feel like a pepper, you know?
8. A prevalent sense of history. Now, it is certainly not the most comfortable of histories -- especially when you live in a town that still has a public park called "Confederate Park". But, there is a lot of history down here and I love that.

I am really jealous of the widespread availability of Diet Dr. Pepper...
One of these days I'll have to try to find some pimento cheese. You and MB both seem to be big fans. It makes me wonder what all the fuss is about.
Woohoo for the South!
I am one of the people who love pimento cheese, as you can read here.
If you're going to try some, and it's not from my grandmother's house, I highly recommend the Kroger deli brand. It's not actually at the deli counter but it's in with the other regular cheeses.
I'm with you on the slower pace of life. I used to internalize the hectic pace of Chicago and I was never able to totally relax. But I can now and it's lovely. Our favorite "sandwich" place in Chicago was a little gyros shop between home and church. I always felt like I was taking my life into my hands, although they always got an A from the health depeartment, but it was worth it. I also dug that "5-Way Chili" place. Jay and I met there on weeknights when we had church meetings.
I wish we had more mom and pop BBQ joints here. The "Reader's Choice" favorite here is Corky's, which is a Memphis chain. I just can't get into their barbeque.
Oh, I am getting reallyyyy used to the South too, although I still get pretty impatient with the pace sometimes. But I am sure I will miss it when I get back to DC.
Is there a Confederate Park in Charlotte too? Or were you referring to Memphis??? :)
Ritz - I tried the pimento cheese, and truth be told, I am not down with it. But if you like mayo, and you like cheese, you will probably like it.
MB - yeah I do not get or share the Corky's fascination. Especially when the Barbecue Shop is here. Or Rendezvous. Or about 10 other places with better bbq.
Charlotte is really too "new" to have a Confederate Park, but, my little town of Fort Mill in South Carolina once served as the base for President Jefferson Davis and has a Confederate Park.
Here's crazy...
I was walking through one of the academic buildings at Union today to get to Kindermusik and there's a big sign on one of the doors stating that McAlister's Deli will be hiring for their new store here in Jackson.
I've never even heard of the place and now I've heard it twice in as many days!
If it's the same McAlister's I've encountered, it's not that local. There are multiple ones here, and in Meridian, Mississippi (I have eaten at the one there), and I think elsewhere in the South. They serve baked potatoes the size of your head.
Ohhh -- I totally thought it was local because they list locations only in Charlotte and Rock Hill. That must be the local franchise? Anyway -- big thumbs up for McAlister's Deli -- they have this sandwich called the Big Nasty that is basically a beef au jus, but, I love the name. There used to be a bar in Chicago that Christine and I went to when we were still in college called the Big Nasty, and it really was Nasty. You walked in and they squirted silly string all over your chest and other embarrassing places! LOL
Anyway, back to McAlister's -- they also have these huge baked potatoes, great chocolate chip cookies, and huge sodas. Mmmm -- we may be having McAlister's tonight! :-)
